Operation Breaking Even

May 11th 2026,
9 years before the East Wind crisis
The Republic of Altis and Stratis,
Situation

With the cold war approaching its end, Britain began losing their hold over colonies, and the Republic of Altis and Stratis was no exception, having gained independence prior to the beginning of the 21st century. The early 2010s would see a decline in the young republic's economy, as well as political divisions rise between the nation's populace.

Tensions reached their boiling point when a group of rogue army officers, united by Colonel Georgious Akhanteros carried out a coup d'état in 2026, under the pretext of removing corrupt civilian leaders. This act of rebellion was badly-received. Remnants of the civilian leadership and deserters from the army picked up arms and formed the Loyalists, directly opposing Akhanteros and his junta. This uprising degenerated into a full-blown civil war, causing utter devastation to the country, with Altians turning on each other and entire towns being reduced to ruins as a result of heavy fighting. In an effort to bring aid to those who need it, IDAP (International Development and Aid Project) negotiated a six-day ceasefire between the Loyalists and the AAF, in order to allow NGOs to carry out their work safely.

However, hours after the ceasefire is declared, on the morning of the 11th of May, the AAF opened fire on a Loyalist patrol that got too close to the village of Orino. The Loyalists respond to this by launching their own offensive, seizing the towns of Orino and Galati, while also freeing up an IDAP convoy that was being held back by the AAF, as a form of punishment for civilians supporting the Loyalists.

This operation is inspired by the Arma3 TAC-OPS DLC campaign Beyond Hope, having you play as an AAF SF unit responding to the Loyalist offensive.

Mission Briefing

Earlier this morning, at around 0348 hours, a Loyalist patrol got too close to our line of defense near the town of Orino, breaching the terms of the ceasefire, and friendly AAF troops stationed there engaged and won the firefight. At 0413 hours, the Loyalists responded to this by launching a full-scale mechanized assault on the town, capturing multiple key facilities there. A few hours later, the Loyalists seized the opportunity and pushed further North, freeing an IDAP convoy that we were holding back  as punishment for the civilians in Abdera for supporting the enemy. To make matters worse, they also took the town of Galati, the adjacent FOB, and they defeated our counter-attack from Athira. Being faced with an unconventional enemy, it has been decided to bring in the 1st Reg. Charlie Co. Special Forces Platoon. It is now 1130, and HQ has put a plan in motion in order regain the initiative and push the Loyalists back.

Unfortunately, with the latest offensive, the enemy managed to gain a lot of ground, essentialy forming a frontline Between Poliakko-Agios Dionysios- Orino-Galati- Aristi, getting dangerously close to two of our airbases. At 1115, a mechanized platoon from Bravo Company stepped off and seized the Town of Agios Dionysios, paving the way for your counter-offensive. You are currently at the SFG HQ near the Main Airport. The Commander's intent is for you to immediately move to the town of Agios Dionysios, and then push North, securing Orino, Galati and the convoy, before the Loyalists have a chance to move it. Friendly elements will remain in Agios Dionysios to secure your flank. Caution is advised, as we expect the enemy to turn our defenses against us. For fire support and recon you will be getting a L-39 Albatros  detached from the 2nd Air Wing. Should you need more firepower, the Platoon SGT can also call in artillery. Resupply is also available (as always, put your ammo in the little boxes).

One last aspect, the rest of the world is watching our every move. We are already being accused of warcrimes and overuse of force, and unless we control ourselves we risk foreign intervention from NATO or any other alliance wanting to expand their influence under the pretext of peacekeeping. As such, it is mandatory that you respect the LOAC (Laws of Armed Conflict - Distinction, Proportionality, Military Necessity, Unnecessary Suffering). With a US carrier TF sitting a few hundred nautical miles off the coast, and our navy in shambles, we cannot afford to anger the international community.

Threat report

The recent offensive forced surviving AAF elements to retreat from their bases without scuttling them or their equipment. Combine this with the existance of black-market dealers and the Loyalists become a mechanized threat.  Our analysts expect the enemy to have old cold-war equipment, BTRs, some BMPs, M113s and tehnicals, light body armor and small arms. While we are technologically superior, the enemy outnumbers us, and given their current guerilla warfare tactics, their old equipment can match ours.  In terms of numbers, we are looking at multiple platoons operating in your AO, with many more on the way to exploit this gap in our defenses. INTEL suggests that the enemy operates in cells, independent from eachother

Mission Objectives
  • Recapture the town of Orino
The town was of high importance to the AAF, hosting lines of fortifications, a mortar emplacement, which you can expect the enemy to use against you, and a medical facility on the outskirts. Do note that we had wounded being treated at the medical facility and they are most likely still there, unless they were moved as POWs, WATCH YOUR FIRE. In order to simplify this offensive, we have designated POIs in the AO that you will need to clear before the town is considered recaptured.  HQ recommends you approach from Agios Dionysios and cross the frontline there, where defenses should be weakest. Expect enemy reinforcements from the North and the West
  • Seize the convoy
Friendly AAF troops were holding an IDAP convoy at their checkpoint between Galati and Syrta before the Loyalists took over. HQ expects you to recapture the convoy and the checkpoint INTACT. Watch your fire for any IDAP members still around, they are NGOs and protected under international law. The checkpoint is in a valley, and we had defenses on both sides, which you can expect the enemy to occupy, unless they built their own
  • Recapture the town of Galati
AFTER you've seized the convoy, you will move up and recapture the town of Galati. HQ strongly advises against moving into the town before clearing up the convoy, as the town will need to be cleared house by house. Galati was hit by a counter-attack a few hours ago, but we believe the enemy had enough time to reorganize since then. In order for the objective to complete you will need to seize the supply base to the NW, on the hilltop, and the checkpoint to the East, on the road to Athira. Beware of your fire, there are still civilians present in the town, along with possible wounded from both sides. All of those mentioned above are considered non-combatants.
  • Deliver the convoy to Ammolofi Airbase
The vehicles, together with any IDAP personnel are to be delivered to the airbase only after you've cleared the other three objectives. Once you get to base we will hand-over the vehicles to NGOs so they can continue their work. DO NOT steal any supplies from the trucks.
  • Respect the LOAC
Remember! Distinction (the enemy looks nothing like us or the civvies, no excuses!), Proportionality(no excessive use of force), Military Necessity(sometimes civpop casualties are acceptable, ex: a man standing next to a tank shooting your squad is deemed an acceptable casualty of war), Unnecessary Suffering(the civvies have it hard as it is, don't make it worse, avoid blowing up critical civilian infrastructure etc.)
