Operation Devil’s Cackle

Operation Devil’s Cackle

April 24th 1987
Kunar province, Afghanistan
Historical Background

On the 24th of December 1979, the USSR launches a ‘special operation’ to replace the failing Afghan socialist government and to put a stop to the various militant groups controlling the countryside. This, however, does the exact opposite of what the Soviets had hoped for. The resolve of the militant groups is only strengthened by the invasion and so they unite against a common enemy, starting to call themselves ‘the Mujahideen’ - .

Several years of brutal guerilla warfare ensue. The country is in shambles and hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed and several million have fled to neighboring countries. But the Soviets are suffering heavy losses too… Just like the Americans had their Vietnam, it is now the Soviets’ turn to suffer an unwinnable guerilla conflict. Still, as of 1987 the Soviets still fight on but everybody knows it is just a matter of time.

The Convoy

At around 5:15 AM local time, a desperate call comes from the radio at the Prozakhar airbase. A convoy consisting of around 15 vehicles has been ambushed on the outskirts of Ovallestán. “Losses are high and the bridge is sawn in half” says the soviet commander with the echoes of machinegun fire all around him. As it turns out, their force is now split on two banks of the river and unable to reach the other bank due to thick mud and enemy fire. Mujahideen are lobbing RPGs and grenades at surviving vehicles from the surrounding hills and the dismounts are under heavy small arms fire from the town itself. The situation is too chaotic to understand the details of where friend or foe is, so artillery is out of the question. We need to send in the VDV…

Friendly forces
  • You will be playing as the Soviet VDV
  • You will have 2 Mi-24’s for CAS and ferrying of troops -
(You can choose between Mi-24P and Mi-24V)
  • You will have 1 Mi-8 for dedicated reinserting
  • The attacked column is made up mostly of BTR’s, MT-LB’s and various trucks/support vehicles

Enemy forces:

At this stage of war, we’re already used to what the Mujahideen equipment usually looks like, you may expect:

  • Heavily motivated but poorly trained and equipped militants
  • Light vehicles (cars, trucks - if any)
  • Unconventional means such as suicide bombers, IED’s etc.
  • Less than a year ago, the mujahideen started being supplied with US-made stinger missiles, let’s hope this place is too remote for them to get those here

Tips/Extra notes

  • The flight back and forth is rather long, soooo try not to die too much ;)
  • Resupplying will be available at the convoy’s ammo trucks and such
  • Collateral damage? What’s collateral damage?
