Operation Fading Nimbus

Operation Fading Nimbus

Madrigal, 23 Librae System, 2524
Situation on Madrigal, 3rd day of the UNSC Invasion

Operation Abundant Tenacity was a huge win for the UNSC forces in Sector 45-AX/2. The Insurrection's main airbase was seized, their air force mostly wiped out, and their commander, Colonel Robert Watts, won't be able to coordinate them anymore, thanks to the 57 large avulsions you inflicted on him. However, the fight is far from over. Only a small portion of the sector has been captured, and Insurrectionists are still roaming the lands. RECON indicates that they are consolidating their positions, most likely to delay us until they get reinforced. We've also seen an increase in guerilla warfare close to the frontlines. Your company took very few casualties, compared to the rest at least, and it has been decided to keep you in the action. This time, you will have the full arsenal of the UNSC at your disposal, weaponry and vehicle-wise. Use it well, as you will need it to break through the enemy lines. Unfortunately, the Vanguard of Liberty won't be able to help you with this operation, as an Insurrection fleet is approaching the system, and ALL UNSC  combat ships are preparing for the upcoming battle.

The overall invasion of Madrigal is going well. It seems most resistance was met in your sector. UNSC units are steamrolling the Insurrection on this planet. Command expects a total victory in less than a week. Plans for future offensives are already being made.

Mission Briefing

Operation Fading Nimbus has received the green light. The overall goal of this offensive is to force the enemy into submission in Sector 45-AX/2. Sounds complicated, but it isn't. The commander's intent is to separate the enemy forces in the four islands surrounding the capital of Barcelonova. This way, our foe will have to fight isolated in multiple places and without communication with other groups. If we manage to pull off our blockade manoeuvres (by gaining control of all bridges and maintaining it), the enemy will have no choice but to surrender or throw themselves at us in a desperate attempt to survive, like the worms they are. Being on the Southeastern side, all, if not most, of your objectives will be there. Other units will be operating in your AO and Sector, so watch your fire. Sector-wise objectives (that other companies were tasked with) will be marked with green on the map for reference. Expect to be tasked with paving a way through the enemy defences and to the bridges leading to Barcelonova.

... (2 hours later, midnight)

While you were gearing up, a small ODST team took over the city of Castra before the enemy could reinforce it, sparing us a bloody battle. Unfortunately, the resupply convoy heading to the city was ambushed just at its gates, the enemies keeping them pinned under heavy fire from the nearby hill range. As they are in your AOR, and all other forces have been deployed on the other islands, you are to step off effective immediately and head towards the ambushed convoy before proceeding with the main mission objective. You will set up a perimeter, repel the enemy attack, and give aid to anyone who needs it. You will also have to coordinate with the commander there. Afterwards, you will be tasked with capturing  Laredo Base. We believe the ambush came from there. YOU CANNOT proceed to the bridges while the enemy holds such a major stronghold in the sector, so unfortunately, you will need to mount an assault. You have access to all supports as you need them, including vehicle replacements, resupply, fire support and so on, excluding those launched from ships. These may be delayed if other units request them before you, so be warned.

MAKE SURE YOU BRING NVGS. IT WILL GET DARK... :)

Threat Report

Command expects a desperate enemy. They know they don't have much of a fighting chance, but they will brawl with us until there's nothing left of them. They don't seem to be aware of our plans to isolate them, so the attack should hopefully go well. Recon reports an increase in enemy armoured vehicles and improvised fortifications. To counter this, you now have access to top-of-the-line tanks. Otherwise, the situation hasn't changed since the first day of the invasion.

Mission Objectives

Other companies

  • Seize critical objectives in the sector (radio towers, ammo caches, depots, etc.)
  • Gain control over the bridges and hold them

Your company

  • OBJ 1 - Help the friendly convoy
The resupply convoy heading to the newly captured town of Castra was ambushed just before the city walls. You are the only unit close enough and capable of helping them. The commander of the convoy survived and is currently coordinating the remaining soldiers to mount a defence. You are to step off ASAP and reinforce the convoy. Avoid pushing into the enemy kill zone. We don't need another convoy to rescue. Coordinate with the commander to figure out and execute a plan of action. On top of this, the commander reported having many injured, so if you can, lend some aid.
  • OBJ 2 - Capture Laredo Base
Our whole plan would be for nothing if the enemy still held such a stronghold on the island. Command believes that if we ignore the base and proceed to the bridges, the enemy will consolidate in Laredo. YOU MUST capture the base before you even consider the bridges an option
  • OBJ 3 - Seize and hold the two bridges
Bridges Phi and Theta were assigned to you. In order to make the plan work, you need to capture them and hold them. Expect the enemy to try and make a breakthrough from both sides. YOU MUSTN'T ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN.
  • OBJ 4 - EXTERMINATE THE INFERIOR INSURRECTION
