Operation Unexpected Friends

Operation Unexpected Friends

May 5th 1945
Itter and surroundings, Tyrol, Austria
Journal entry

...Hitler is dead. Berlin has fallen to the Soviets. Our boys met up with them somewhere on the Elbe. Germany should be ours soon. But alas, we fight on. The Germans have been surrendering en masse, but not all of them. The SS still puts up resistance, as hopeless as it may be, it looks like they intend to fight until the end...

Situation report - 142nd Infantry Regiment

Mission:

Continue the advance towards designated objectives as outlined in Division Orders.

  • Flush SS units out of Wörgl
  • Secure the surrounding areas, villages, strategic positions
  • Capture any surrendering units
  • Relieve the positions of the 12th Armored Division

Enemy forces:

Reports indicate a weakened German force in disarray, offering sporadic resistance. However, pockets of fanatical resistance, particularly from SS units, are still possible.

Friendly forces:

Advancing alongside elements of XXI Corps. Limited communication with nearby units established. Morale remains high despite ongoing fatigue.  Troops are eager to secure victory.

Logistics:

Supply lines stretched thin due to rapid advance. Ammunition and fuel reserves at moderate levels. Medical supplies running low.

Casualties:

3 killed, 12 wounded, 0 missing in action.

Civilian Population:

The local Austrian populace appears cooperative. Reports of potential SS atrocities against high-profile prisoners held in nearby Castle Itter require confirmation due to the recent liberation of the Landsberg concentration camps.

Recommendations:

  • Maintain vigilance for enemy counterattacks and ambushes, particularly from SS units.
  • Prioritize securing positions for medical supplies and ammunition resupply.
  • Establish clearer communication channels with nearby friendly forces.
